The Haynie Public Library’s summerreading program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” ended with a buzz lastweek. Local beekeeper Missy Husted explained how bees swarm, collectpollen and make honey.
“A worker bee only lives about fourto six weeks and only makes about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey,”Husted said. “But a whole hive can make up to 400 pounds of honeyin a year.”
Husted also brought a hive of bees forthe children to see. Through the glass front, the children couldwatch the bees feeding larvae and making honey in comb.
Last week was the last of the summerreading programs, but director Pamela Batson says the library hasseveral programs planned for July.
“We have reading times for childrenbetween two and six years old, as well as a movie time scheduled,”Batson said. “We had more than 300 children come to the programs inJune, and we hope we have that many in July!”
